Recently France banned supermarkets from throwing away unused food. Hopefully this action will inspire other countries (or even provinces) to follow their lead. North America, especially, needs to take notice as we waste the most food per capita a year!
It is important that consumers become aware of the impact they have on society when they throw away a bruised banana or a half-eaten sandwich. We've all heard the phrase, "kids in Africa are starving." Yes, this is true, but people in North America are starving, probably in their own city. Because sending food to other countries isn't a feasible solution, instead, we can send it to communities less than 3 kilometres away. Small actions like, giving away unwanted food, make a big impact when done on a larger scale.
Hopefully, you'll think twice before throwing that bruised banana away! If you are interested about France's new policy, here is an article written by Business Insider: http://www.businessinsider.com/how-france-became-a-global-leader-in-curbing-food-waste-2018-1
